Couples Who Slay Together – Martiean & Effy

Welcome to our Community Project of 2017 (you can see our last one in 2014 here)!

We propose to do a series of – fun and lightearted – interviews which help us learn a bit more about our awesome community, and hopefully unravel some juicy details about our readers.

If you would like to get involved, contact us.

Hello! Can you introduce yourselves?

We are Martiean & Effy, or Joe & Jamie.  Former WoW Players, Joe is a YouTuber, podcaster while Jamie is the writer and blogger.

Could you share a pic of you together – either IRL or in game, we don’t mind!

Definitely!

How long have you been together and where did you meet?

We will have been together for four years this November. We met in Azeroth, being a part of the same guild and eventually hanging out together here and there.  We eventually met for real when Jamie took a trip to North Carolina where I was living at the time.

Show us a picture of your setup – do you have a cute couple thing going on, all cosy?

Not much to see really, my desk is in the basement where my office will be once its finished & Jamie uses her laptop to write around the house.  When she games these days its usually on our Nintendo 3DS. I also like the DS at the moment, easy to just switch on for a bit and switch off again.

So, do you tend to play the same games together or prefer to keep gaming life separate?

We do enjoy playing games together, it’s just we are a lot more busy these days so gaming isn’t the priority it once was. I hear you 😦 hoping to get a console at some point, like a WII U or Switch so we can play a lot of the Zelda games we missed out on.

With the current political situation it’s only right we ask your affiliation: HORDE OR ALLIANCE?

Jamie has always been Alliance, and while I started out that way, I eventually felt more home with the Horde.  So we have a split household there.

As a couple, do you find sharing your gaming hobby helps your relationship?

It definitely does, no matter what happens, how bad our day has been or rough life is, we have that common language and history.  We also can fall back into it as a means of distraction and fun.  Gaming will always be central to who we are as a couple because without it, we wouldn’t have ever met.

*ahem* who rides who on the two seater mount?

Depends on the situation.
Who is the raid leader in your relationship?!
My first instinct is to say Jamie because she has helped me so incredibly much in the past few years, getting back on my feet & starting over again and really helping me to be a better person. But overall, we both are a team and work together equally.

What’s been the biggest, how can I say this… marital dispute… whilst gaming together?
I’d say the time she wanted to level through a zone I didnt want to in WoW.  I am VERY OCD when it comes to my leveling & I did not like change. I think it is difficult when you have a set way of doing something and someone else wants to change your routine. I get it. Anxiety is a real thing and I panicked about it and got upset.  All in all it was a stupid argument that I caused, but I suppose in the grand scheme its very minor.

One of you has to kill 100 kobolds and one has to collect the 100 shiny beads they drop… who does which task and why?

Again we do things together so we would both kill & loot.. if anything we would be working to make sure we kept things together to AOE loot efficiently.

Where do you see your future in gaming?

I think I will be gaming & making content on PC for years to come, but as a couple I think our future in game is definitely on console.  Console tends to me more social, sitting on the couch in the living room, sharing the experience with the family.

Ok, the million pound question. You’re farming a rare mount. Neither of you has it. It drops. Who gets it?!!

Jamie will attest that I would probably insist she have it because that is just how I am.  Example, I try to always make sure everyone at dinner is served before I go, simply because I want everyone to have as much as they want first.  But if its one Jamie knows I have wanted for a long time she would insist too.  We are a team to the very end.

  1. Thank you for sharing with us, Martiean & Effy 🙂 Gorgeous hair colour, Jamie!

A console is a great way to play together too, somehow, at least for me, it feels more “together when sitting on a couch and share one tv, than two individual computers 🙂
